The design of the long-awaited VW sedan

We will have to wait until the end of 2021 to have the pleasure of testing the all-new 2022 VW Golf R, now in its 8th generation. Available in only one version, the 2022 Golf R is looking sharper than ever, and promises to be even faster. Available in 3 colours, including the superb Lapiz Blue Metallic, and the classic black and white, the newest model stands out from the pack with its blue brake callipers, its stylish 19-inch wheels, its matte aluminum accents, its larger air intakes, its 4-tipped chrome exhaust system, its two-piece rear spoiler and its dynamic lines. They all come together to create a fresh and decidedly sporty look. The 2022 Golf can also be equipped with the optional panoramic sunroof.

The 2022 Golf R, scheduled for release this fall, features a lower, longer silhouette, giving it a decidedly more aerodynamic profile. In addition to the new two-piece rear spoiler that reduces lift both in the front and the rear, its stability, responsiveness and high-speed steering are greatly improved to deliver the ultimate driving experience on the road.

The specs of the new Golf

The new 2022 Golf R is already being praised for its fiery performance on the road. It performs better than the outgoing model thanks to its impressive 315 horsepower engine, 27 hp more than last year’s engine, and 295 lb-ft of torque, which is 30 lb-ft greater than last year. Heel-and-toe fans will also be pleased to know that the 6-speed manual transmission is back! For the rest of us, the super-fast 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission will be available as an option. For those who like numbers, its 0-100 km/h time is of only 4.7 seconds and its top speed reaches 270 km/h.

Among its numerous technological innovations, the Golf R spoils us with a new torque vectoring rear differential. It also includes the new Drift mode, which temporarily suspends stability control allowing you to make your car dance. Also, this year's all-wheel drive system is equipped with a new torque vectoring system on the rear axle, which delivers better agility and incredible balance for faster and safer cornering.

Priced at $44,995 for the manual version and $46,395 for the automatic, the 2022 Golf R offers two new driving modes, the Special (Nürburgring) and Drift modes, which allow you to fine-tune your driving experience. What’s more, its larger brakes feature cross-drilled front discs to deliver all the braking power you need to slow down its fiery engine.

Interior and equipment of the 2022 Golf R

The Nappa leather sport seats feature prominent bolsters on each side to keep you in place when the going gets tough. Its interior is both stylish and functional, with a digital cockpit, head-up display, a sleek, ultra-modern dashboard with blue accents throughout the cabin, including on the console and the steering wheel. It also features blue ambient lighting, and the blue R logo embroidered on the ultra-comfortable seats. These and other features make up the beautiful decor of its welcoming cabin, blending simplicity with elegance.

One of the best features of the 2022 Golf R is without a doubt its exterior lighting. Indeed, when you approach your car with your electronic key, it comes to life with lights from the door handles, exterior mirrors, headlights and taillights, as if saying “Welcome back”!

The love affair Quebecers have with the Volkswagen Golf is certainly full of passion. Unfortunately, this is the last year that VW will manufacture the "regular" version. Afterwards, the Golf R and Golf GTI will be the only ones left on the menu, and we are very happy about that!

The sporty GTI is just as chic, but it's a little less powerful with its turbocharged 2.0 L 4-cylinder engine that produces 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. Like the R, the GTI also offers the choice between a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission. While the R features blue accents and lighting, the GTI relies on beautiful red accents, both for the interior and the exterior.
